A
Faithful Reproduction
Coveys of visitors will be flocking to Faith, South Dakota this summer to
see the most famous and complete T-Rex ever found. Driving into this
small cow town, they will be greeted by a newly installed sculpture created
by ABH artist, John Lopez.
Faith has always been well known for its cowboys,
but after Sue was unearthed very near the town, it became
famous for dinosaurs as well...strange bedfellows indeed!
How to unite the two seemingly conflicting cultures? Leave that to
the creative mind of an artist!
The Lopez sculpture mixes both cowboy culture and
the South Dakota State Fossil, the Triceratops. This 15
foot tall sculpture features a young cowboy aboard a Triceratops, waving
his hat to greet people as they drive into Faith this summer. Visitors
and locals alike will be charmed by this cure for the common cowboy.
Forsaking his traditional means of transportation, this Icon of the West
blends the far-distant past with the past that is not so far away. Welcome
to the Cow Town with a Paleontological twist! The sculpture
will be in Faith, SD at the entrance of the Sue exhibit until September 1,
08.
Dorothy Snowden Painting Ponies
Dorothy Snowden
has been chosen to be the first ever Artist-In-Residence at North Dakota
Horse Park during their late August race meet. She will be painting
racing scenes and a portrait of Barracuda Boy, the new Equine
Ambassador of the the North Dakota Horse Park. By same sire (Unbridled’s
Song) as the filly Eight Belles and survivor of a racing injury himself,
Barracuda Boy and his story of triumph over injury will become the cornerstone
of Horse Race North Dakota’s public education program during the live race
meet and throughout the year at area equine events.
Dorothy's painting
of
Barracuda Boy will be made into a poster and used
as a fund raiser for retired race horses. Dorothy and the horse's jockey
will be signing the work. Dorothy will also be doing an
Artist's Residency at Custer State Park, September 9th through October
10th, 2008.
Steve Roselles Selected
Steve Roselles has been
selected to participate in the 17th Annual National Juried Exhibition of
the Oil Painters of America. Over 1200 artists submitted more than
2000 works for jurying. Steve was one of only 200 whose paintings
were selected for the exhibition, and he has been awarded additional
honors in the form of two special jurors awards sponsored by Sourcetek and
the Arlington Heights Art Guild.
The National Exhibition, at the Dana Gallery in Missoula, Montana,
runs from May 2nd through June 14th. As a result of his selection,
Steve is eligible for signature membership in the prestigious Oil Painters
of America.
Regarding his work, Steve has said, "My style can loosely be
described as impressionistic - I like the time honored description of
impressionism - the placement of single strokes of paint that are the
right color, the right shape, and placed in the right spot - this
is what I strive for when painting."
Steve works both en plein air and in the studio.
Self-taught, he has developed a unique style using a palette knife for
the majority of his pieces. He enjoys painting landscapes, parks,
gardens, and architectural subjects. Steve's paintings
may be seen at Blue Dog Gallery in Lead, SD, at Prairie
Edge Gallery in Rapid City, and at Wyoming Art and Frame
in Gillette. In addition, his latest work will be on display
during the Artists of the Black Hills Annual Exhibition, opening June
28th at the Opera House in Lead, SD.
Steve Roselles is a South Dakota native who grew up in the gold mining town of
Lead. He is a founding member of the Artists of the Black Hills.
