artists of the black hills

I feel a strong reverence for the earth when I paint landscapes, especially when I paint plein aire. The sounds and even smells influence my reaction to a particular scene. I've found beauty in the flat topography of North Dakota and Nebraska as well as mountain scenes in the Black Hills and Wyoming.

Landscapes that soothe the soul, structures with personality and people caught in the moment are subjects I enjoy. I've been painting for about 12 years in oils and watercolors. I enjoy working with watercolors when I want the paint to work for me and use oils when I want more control.

I grew up in the Black Hills and have a BS degree and art minor from BHSU, Spearfish, SD. While living in Nebraska, I received a BA degree in art education from the University of Nebraska - Kearney. I was founder and director of Prairie Winds Art Center in Grand Island, Ne. from 1994-2001. I've studied with nationally known instructors such as Bob Rohm, Judi Betts, John Salmanen, Frank Webb and George Stickland.

I'm a signature member of The Artist's of the Black Hills and signature member of the Northern Plains Watercolor Society. I currently have work at the Blue Dog Gallery in Lead, SD; Mike Tysdal and Bill Brown State Farm offices in Rapid City, SD; Prairie Winds Art Center in Grand Island, NE and The Graham Gallery in Hastings, NE.

I've received numerous awards over the last 12 years. Most recently I received the Gold Watercolor Award for Excellence as a watercolorist in Moorhead, Mn; second place at the Buffalo Gap show and sale near Rapid City, SD and was juried into the AVA live benefit auction in Gillette, Wyoming.

Whether the subject is a person, structure or a landscape, I try to convey my feelings to the viewer. If someone understands what I'm saying and connects with the painting... I feel I've succeeded.
